Management Plan of the Port of Funchal

The harbour structure of the Autonomous Region of Madeira it is in great changes with the start of operation of the commercial port of Caniçal. This restructuring meaned the definition of new functions for the port of Funchal which were approved in the Council of the Government of the Autonomous Region of Madeira through the Management Plan of the Port of Funchal.
This plan establishes an adaptation of the existing space and the way of linking the whole harbour area to the urban zone nearby, transforming the Port into an infrastructure which is dedicated exclusively to tourist and recreational sailing and an active part of the city of Funchal.
The Port Administration aims to respond therefore in a qualitative way to the great increase in the cruise ship market which has taken place in the Island of Madeira during the last decade and to reclassify one of the most impressive areas of the city of Funchal.

Management Plan of the Port of Caniçal

The construction of the Port of Caniçal began in 1990, with the aim of installing a new terminal to serve the Industrial Free Zone of Madeira. Initially the Port of Caniçal was concerned with container operation and fishing, having two main areas, each of which was specialised in these types of cargo.
With the passing of the years, the objectives for the port were being altered, in such a way as to permit the transfer to the same of a significant part of the current movement of the Port of Funchal.
In the Economic and Social Development Plan 2000-2006, the Government of the Autonomous Region of Madeira decided to move all the commercial activity from the Port of Funchal to Caniçal.
This decision, associated with the free development of the Industrial Free Zone, renders the necessity of quays which can accommodate ships and movement of general cargo (separated and in containers) and bulk solids (cereals and cement) and ground areas for the services associated with these cargos (parking areas, administrative buildings, entrance gates, etc).
The Port of Caniçal is now the main infrastructure of harbour movement for commercial cargo destined for/originating in the Island of Madeira.

The interventions works, whose global investment ascended to 75 millions euros, participated in 58% by "Fundo de Coesão", understand the extension of the protection sea break to the port, the construction of a ramp ro/ro for the movement of goods under rolling platform, the enlargement for nascent and west of the quay of containers and still the enlargement of the dock area.
The investment is from the "Secretaria Regional do Equipamento Social e Transportes" through the APRAM, S.A..

The all investment is evaluated in 6,5 millions euros, being participated by the European Union through the "Fundo de Coesão" in 58%.
The works are from the Consortium Tecnovia - Madeira, Sociedade de Empreitadas, SA/Tecnovia - Sociedade de Empreitadas,SA. Planege - Consultores de Engenharia e Gestão, S.A. had to its charge the inspection of the work, in a value arranged of seventy thousand euros.

Container terminal jetty 420 metres in length and –8,0 metres in depth (ZH)
    Multi-purpose levelled area 42,750 m2

Management plan of the Port of Porto Santo

Bearing in mind the development and growth trends which are taking place in the island of Porto Santo and the estimates for the increase in harbour activity by the year 2020, the harbour administration decided to draw up a Management Plan for the Port of Porto Santo. The plan takes into account the movement of passengers, of cargo separated and in containers, of fishing activities and leisure and recreation activities.
For the future of the Port of Porto Santo there are plans for an increase of 100 metres of the main mooring jetty, the installation of new mooring posts, the construction of administrative services and harbour activity buildings, roads and pedestrian walkways and the requalification of the access road network to the Port.
The strong point of these works will be to permit the mooring of cruise ships of great depth and the enlargement of the area of berthing of pleasure boats

Enlargement of the Bulk Unloading terminal of Porto Novo

By way of responding to the increase in the movement of coarse sand cargo in the Terminal of Porto Novo, enlargement works of this infrastructure are finished. The aim of increasing the capacity of the movement of sand in the Autonomous Region of Madeira is therefore expected to be accomplished.
The works will essentially be the extention of the present jetty, creating two mooring jetties with approximately 160 metres in length each. This terminal will have working depths of –5m (ZH), -8,5m (ZH) and –10m (ZH).
